Mayakovski (1893-1930) is one of the most important post-Revolution poets of Russia, and one of the major international figures of 20th-century avant-garde poetics. This selected edition draws from his entire career, ranging from his early love lyric "The Cloud in Trousers," through "Conversation with a tax Collector about Poetry," to "Bedbug," his late dramatic work exploding with his disillusionment with the Soviet State. Russian originals face the English translations.In a State Department store in Tambov, a central Russian town, in 1929, Ivan Prisypkin otherwise known as Pierre Skripkin, a former Party member, former worker, and now the fiancé of Elzevir Davidovna Renaissance, accompanied her mother, Rosalie Pavlovna, and a neighboring house owner, Oleg Bard, on a shopping spree in preparation for the wedding. Salespeople were hawking their wares, and Prisypkin was buying everything because his house had to be like a horn of plenty and his future children must be brought up to be refined.Mayakovski turned on the Soviet leadership and mocked the communists in his plays Klop translated as The Bedbug and Banya translated as The Bathhouse. In The Bedbug, a dedicated communist, Prisypkin, is revealed as an obnoxious bureaucrat. His frozen corpse is discovered fifty years later with communism prevalent throughout the world—and thawed. But once having returned to life, the hero finds that his boorish behavior is unacceptable to ruling communists, and so he is caged at a zoo. The Bathhouse is even more vehement in its negativity towards communism. Here a dictator spends his time extolling the virtues of his own regime. The Bathhouse proved particularly offensive to Soviet authorities, who sanctioned literary attacks on Mayakovski by various party-supported critics.In the first scene we see Ivan Prisypkin, a former Party member, strolls into a huge State Department Store in Tambov, accompanied by his future mother-in-law Rosalie Pavlovna Renaissance (who runs a successful beauty parlor) and an eccentric house-owner named Oleg Bayan. Hawkers are selling all sorts of products: bananas, German whetstones, lampshades, balloons, herring, glue, perfume, and fur-lined brassieres. Declaring, "My house must be like a horn of plenty", Prisypkin orders Rosalie to buy up all sorts of unnecessary stuff such as bonnets and dancing dolls for his future children. Rosalie is reluctant, but Bayan advises her that Prisypkin way is the way of the up-and-coming working class; and, more importantly, Prisypkin is bringing an immaculate proletarian origin into her family along with an all-important union card. So Rosalie shouldn't count her kopecks. In the second scene A Mechanic says Prisypkin is like a deserter abandoning the trenches. It's still like 1919, the Mechanic says, with lice everywhere. He continues, "Our enemies attack silently now--that's the only difference. And people shoot with noiseless powder." In the third scene there is singing, dancing, and drinking. Disorder breaks out. An accountant pokes Prysipkin's wife with a fish. There is pushing and shoving. The bride is knocked up against the stove. Her veil catches fire. Soon the whole beauty parlor is ablaze. In the fourth scene the beauty parlor is completely destroyed. One corpse is unaccounted for, probably lost somewhere in the deep, rubble-and-water-filled cellar. The fire brigade chants a short simple song about the mixing vodka and fires. In the fifth scene The World Federation calls for a global vote. A frozen human figure was found in a caved-in, ice-filled cellar in Tambov. The Institute for Human Resurrection considers it possible and advisable to revive the figure, noting that every worker must be utilized until the very last second. They point out that there are callouses on the hands of the figure, which, in the long-ago times, was the mark of a worker. In the end arming him with a pistol, the Director brings Prisypkin out of the cage to demonstrate how it can mimic human speech. Prisypkin shoves the Director out of the way and addressed the crowd as "Citizens! Brothers! Darlings! Friends", assuming that they, too, were all unfrozen. He invites them to join him in his cage. Attendants drag Prisypkin back to his cage and they ventilate the stage to remove the foul odor. The Director apologizes to the crowd, saying that the insect was hallucinating as finally meeting ends with a march. The Bath House
