Candide is musical comedy composed by Leonard Bernstein with the lyrics from Richard Wilbur, Stephen Sondheim and John Latouche and is based on the classical satire upon Voltaire in the book written by Hugh Wheeler. This book is popular with major music students for the quality of music and the myriad opportunities it accords to them. This musical comedy is an irreverent look at the life of Candide, a young man living in a sheltered life and full of optimism resulting from the indoctrination by his mentor. There is vivid disillusionment to the perception of life as the boy begins to witness immense hardships. Notwithstanding, the boy holds an enigmatic precept claiming that, “we must cultivate our garden,” for the best. Candide has a sarcastic tone with a fantastic, fast moving and erratic plot. The story is full of adventures and romance clichés that are depicted in a caricatured form of struggle. The struggles at the apparent moment are illustrated in a direct and humorous manner. Voltaire mocks the government, religion, philosophies and philosophers, theologians and the armies through the employment of allegory. The most sited attack is on Liebniz and his inherent optimism (Voltaire 2008). This book was banned for its religious blasphemy, intellectual hostility and political sedition after its publication. However, the book inspired many subsequent authors due to its sharp wit and insightful depiction of man. Leonard Bernstein composed the musical comedy from the book. The book was a box office failure in its inception as a musical piece. It ran only for two months but was criticized for being too serious contrary to its main objective of eliciting humor. There have been endeavors to revive the book with numerous operas performing the version all over the world. The irreverent point of view about life, through a rose colored glass, to make the best possible life has become popular among both young and old music theater enthusiast (Voltaire 2008).
