Ferdinand victor Delacrox a a romantic artist of French origin was born on 26
th April 1798. He is regarded and accorded respects as the father of the French romantic school. As a result of his he studies concerning optical outcomes of color. He profoundly shaped the work of impression. In his artwork he always employed very exclusive brushstrokes. He possessed a passion for the exotic and it is this passion that inspired his symbolist movement. As a refined lithographer he illustrated the works of various renowned writers such as Sir Walter Scott a Scottish writer, Johann Wolfgang Goethe a German writer and Shakespeare's work. Delacroix got is inspiration from the art of Rubens and Venetians Renaissance painter. He had an outstanding emphasis on color and movement as opposed to clear molded form and clear outlines. Clear this was quite different to neoclassical perfectionism embraced by his rivals.Among his painting s Liberty Leading the People which is known as La Liberté guidant le people in French is the most influential piece of art he produced. The paintings commemorate the dethronement of Charles X by the July Revolution in 1830. In the painting, Delacroix depicts a woman who represents liberty leading other people forward over other bodies lying down lifeless. The woman is holding the tricolored flag of the French revolution in her right hand while waving in the left hand a bayoneted musket. The painting as such was a product of the painters bad mood as evidence by what he wrote to his brother stating that his bad mood vanishing and though he had not fought for his country he was painting for her.
The depiction of a lady representing liberty is an allegory representing two ideas; full bodied woman as a strong female leader and a "Goddess" figure. Contemporary critics have however, dismissed or denounce this depiction or approach as being an "ignoble" depiction. Also in the painting, the fallen people represent types of platform on which liberty treads i.e. it is both bare-footed and bare-chested. .
The Phrygian hat worn by the lady-Liberty is a symbol of the need for freedom at the onset of the 1789 French revolution. In the painting Delacroix seem to have been laying across the massage that irrespective of differences in class various people can join forces and together fight to gain their freedom if they share the same the same courage and determination. This can be seen from the depictions in the painting, there is a range of classes of people; a bourgeoisie represented by the man with a hat on, and lower classes of people represented by the child holding guns in his hands. In the painting there are two flags; one of the flags is being waved in the air by liberty while the second flag is a distance behind the crowd from the Notre Dame towers. This composition is more vivid as a whole. The figures and masses of various kinds are certainly dominated by the symbolic figure of the republican liberty which is one of the finest artificial innovations. From the choice technique and subject the painting clearly shows the difference between the romantic approach embraced by Delacroix and the neoclassical style. By far, it also differs from the Romanticism of Géricault and that of Raft of the Medusa.Certainly, this piece of art by Delacroix is remarkable. He was good at symbolism and the use of his romanticism technique. Unfortunately, this romanticism was that of an individual, Delaxia was never given sentimentality. The French government bought this painting for 3000francs to display it in the throne room of Palais Luxembourg. However this plan failed and the painting has been on display at Louvre since 1874.
